MATTHEW BARKET Matt was born and raised in Miami, FL, where he attended Christopher Columbus High School. Following graduation, Matt attended the University of Miami on a baseball scholarship. While at UM he was awarded the Community Service Award given by the Athletic Department to the student-athlete who exhibits outstanding community leadership. After his sophomore year at UM he transferred to Tulane University where graduated from the A.B. Freeman School of Business with a Bachelors of Science and Management Degree. At Tulane Matt served as the Vice-President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and was a member of the University’s Student Advisory Board. As a senior he was selected as the Captain of the Tulane Baseball team, which was ranked pre-season #1 by Baseball America. He went on to play in his second College World Series. After Tulane, he played one year of Professional Baseball with the Windy City Thunderbolts. In pursuit of a law degree, Matt remained in New Orleans and attended Loyola University College of Law. After his first year in Law School he clerked at both the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, for Judge Jose. E. Martinez, and in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, for Judge Mercedes Bach. Additionally, Matt traveled abroad to study international law in Vienna, Austria, allowing him to graduate with his International Legal Studies Certificate. Following his second year, he received a clerkship with the City of Miami Office of the City Attorney, which provided excellent experience in municipal law matters and civil litigation. During his third year, Matt participated in Loyola’s Street Law Program where he taught law at Edna Karr High School. Upon graduating from Loyola with his J.D. he returned to Miami to be closer to his family. He became a Member of the Florida Bar and was subsequently hired as a litigation associate by Acosta Strommen. The same competitive nature that enabled his career in baseball to go pro, also makes him a strong litigator.
